If there is a gap between our current desired performance, we have several options:
Continue our current behavior
Change our current behavior
Choosing between the two isn’t as obvious as it may seem. For instance, given a performance gap, if the performance trend is moving in the desired direction then it may be worth it to continue current behaviors if the timeframe allows. The choice is also tricky if performance is flat-lining, and even if performance is trending in the undesired direction (as it could be a short term/temporary dip that recovers and bounces back in a positive long-term trend). This is, in essence the cost-benefit analysis and the gamble that in many ways makes playing and coaching the game fun in my opinion.
If you the reader are experiencing a long term negative (or at least flatline) trend in performance, and you’ve decided to make a change in order to get the performance trend moving in the desired direction…
The good news: our brains (and thus our behavior) can change.
The bad news: it’s not easy.
